Never in a million years would I have ever thought that I could successfully reduce the sugar in my diet, but after seeing a Buzzfeed article titled 30 Days Of Meals You Can Eat During A Sugar Detox come across my news feed I was inspired to give it a shot. Now mind you, if this was absolutely no sugar, I wouldn’t be able to handle it at all, but this is no added sugar. Look at the ingredients of whatever it is you are eating now or ate last. I bet you a dollar that there is some form of added sugar in there. Sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose and many more are the names this sneaky additive goes by. As someone who has been growing and canning fruit I can tell you sugar is a fantastic preservative. That being said our American food supply is filled with way too much of the stuff. Why do Cheetos need sugar? How about lunch meat? Beef jerky! Why does my Gluten Free bread have sugar in it? In the process I went through an entire jar of Organic Natural Peanut Butter and discovered and remembered some amazing recipes. Among my favorites would have to be lettuce wraps, pho and no sugar added ice cream made from peanut butter and bananas. Read more
I added up all my calories after lettuce wraps and detox pho and realized that I only had 1100 calories that day. Did I mention that I was 180 pounds? Even while dieting that is not enough for someone of my size. Yeah as much as we’d like to believe that a little starvation is all it takes to get down to our goal weight, that can actually switch your body into freak out mode and it wants to hold onto every bit of food you put into it. According to CoachCalorie.com it could even cause your decreased thyroid production. Did I mention that I already have a thyroid issue? That’s all I need. The following day, I downloaded the My Plate app from Livestrong and started punching in my meals. I used to use this years ago, but like some people who abruptly stop taking their required medications as soon as they start feeling better, I quit using it. Day 26– Today I am giving up recommended diet breakfasts and going back to my basic smoothie recipe. This smoothie has a banana, a scoop of whey protein powder, flax seeds, 1/2 cup of yogurt, 1 cup of coconut milk or almond milk and 1/2 c of frozen blueberries. This time I added celery. I don’t know why, it just seemed like the right thing to do. Of course, since I like leftovers I made a double batch and filled the rest of the room in the blender with ice. Of course, as soon as I poured my glass, I realized that I had actually made three servings. I was fine with that because this one was actually delicious. Kim Kardashian was on the View today and looking amazing. Now, while I’m not generally a fan, I have to give credit where credit is due. This woman who is known for her impeccable style looked even better than her usual self.
They talked about all kinds of things like Kanye and Caitlyn Jenner, I stayed glued to the screen quietly calling to the screen, “Talk about your body.” Finally, toward the end of the episode, she finally talks about her regimine and how she slimmed down so much.
Oh, c’mon! No more hormones, no more bloating, but the scale is still stuck. Obviously, I’ve shrunk enough for it to be visible to people to notice, but how on earth is the scale frozen to 180. I’ve picked up a new pair of pants that are size 11/13 which is a size smaller than I have been wearing, but the scale has me perplexed. Yes I know muscle weighs more than fat, but I’m not body building. By that I mean I’m not at the gym lifting weights or anything. Just some light cardio (my knee has its limits), strength training and mostly yoga. I couldn’t have packed on that much muscle in three weeks. There is still the question about the water weight around my injured knee, but I won’t know anything about that for a few days at least. I have an appointment with the surgeon that worked on my other knee on Friday.
There is good news, though. In total, I have lost 4.6 pounds (I did that all in the first week. Whatever!), I have lost 2.25 inches in my chest, two inches around my waist, two inches around my hips, and finally a half an inch on my thighs. Still good news, all around, although I feel like I could be doing better. I see why people say to not pay attention to the scale, but the sad truth is I still weigh 180 pounds. Read more
Rounding out the end of my third week. I am fairly confident that I will get through today and the next nine days with no issues. I’m doing a fairly good job of finding no added sugar options. However, what really cemented my committment was going to see some old friends after a month apart.
I can’t tell you how freeing it feels to have these little weird scones lying around. Breakfast, especially, has so many quick options. Bagels, cereal, doughnuts, coffees, toast are some of the quick grab options we have in our country for an easy breakfast. Not that these are all the healthiest of options. Now, of course it’s not just us. When hubby and I were honeymooning in Tahiti, we found a little market that promised fresh croissants every morning. They were wonderful. We didn’t have that lull you get after eating a subpar breakfast. I’m a big advocate for fresh foods and we were very happy about this find. We often still joke about how nice it would be to walk down and grab something from that market. Read more
Day 18– Happy Father’s day to all you find dads out there and also to all you single moms out there pulling double duty. Usually I do something big and fancy for breakfast. One year I made hubby french toast fondue. That’s a fun one. Make your usual french toast and cut it into one inch pieces. We have a fondue server, so syrup goes in te middle, then have different toppings or candies like sprinkles or something small in different cups and serve with fondue sticks, skewers or toothpicks, then dip into the syrup and whatever combination you dream up. Day 16 — I promised you the answer to one of the many questions I was left scratching my head about the day before. Well here it is. This morning a little fairy left me a clue about why my body is fighting with me, and ladies, you’ve been here before too, you know, every month. GRRR! Well this isn’t the week that I expect much to happen on the weight loss front. I feel for my husband. I don’t get my required influx of chocolate this time, so I cannot be responsible for my actions. What I am excited about though is that I didn’t balloon up like a puffer fish and didn’t put on any weight. That’s almost unheard of. If I’m understanding this right, less sugar equals fewer PMS symptoms? It’s too early to declare results of that one, but it’s a good hypothesis at least.
Today’s Red Flower Menu (that was for the Game of Thrones Fans out there) starts with a breakfast smoothie. I can’t remember where I found this one, but it is supposed to be a quick light smoothie with greens (I was a little hesitant after Green Meanie) and, honestly I can’t remember the recipe. You can see how impactful it was. No yogurt and no almond milk, I remember because I was hungry again shortly afterward, which is why I didn’t save the instructions.
Lunch was another variation of nachos. I recently realized that I’m too heavy on the fruits and need to load up more on vegetables. My salsa rafts are a little more challenging to navigate while already loaded with tomato, olive and avocado, but I made it work.
I really didn’t have much of a dinner. Lunch was quite filling, but I was craving sweet like crazy! I went back and forth about whether my monthly visitor was an adequate excuse to break my detox or not. Finally I stumbled upon a can of 100% pineapple. Thank you Dole! Apparently my grandmother loved fruit over cottage cheese and this has become one of my favorite treats. Husband thinks I’m crazy, but what does he know?
Before bed I got another smaller urge for sweets but that was easily quelled by a handful of cherries. Mmmm. I just love produce in the summer!
Day 17 — Today I woke up craving a good breakfast smoothie. No more recipes, just the usual. I mixed up a banana, 1/2 cup of yogurt, 1 cup of almond milk, a handful of greens and some blueberries. Quick, simple and painless. Lunch was an old favorite of mine. Mexican chili dogs. What’s the difference between those and the usual chili dogs? Well the dogs are lightly browned in a skillet, I use refries instead of chili, and tortillas instead of buns. For all you carb watchers out there, corn tortillas are surprisingly lower on carbs than the usual gluteny hot dog buns. Score! Toppings include chopped onion, a sprinkle of cheese, and some of my delicious tomatillo salsa. I cooked enough for two, but hubby wanted something else. You know what that means. Leftovers! Hubby was on deck for dinner, well, sort of. He warmed up some mini chicken tacos we get from Trader Joe’s. Not a drop of sugar. Then I was to make the guacamole and I make this awesome cucumber salad. Cucumbers, onion and tomatoes soaked in lemon juice and salt. It’s been described to me as a citrus salad and others have called it a pickle salad. Whatever you call it, it’s super refreshing and light for the warm days.
I’m sure I finished up with some tea, but I’m not sure how much longer that will last now that things are starting to heat up.

Oh my holy gawd! I’m weighing in this morning after two full weeks and the scale hasn’t budged! You have got to be kidding me! It has got to be my leg injury, right? I mean it’s puffy, so there could be water on my knee or something. Let me measure it. In fact I need to measure everything else before I throw this scale out and find another one. Read more
